AN AUSSIE CHRISTMAS CAROL
by Pamela Shaw
To the tune of The Holly and the Ivy
The blowflies and mosquitoes
Would carry us away,
If we dare to have a barbie
On an Aussie Christmas Day.
We thought we'd find a quiet beach
And have our Christmas there,
But we can't afford to fix the Ute
So we'll go another year.
Our cousins in the country
Keep begging us to call,
But the roads are cut by floods again -
That's the best excuse of all.
We could play a game of cricket
In the back yard with great zeal,
But our pet dog died last Saturday -
So there's no one left to field.
We'd love to have a picnic
Amongst the flowers and trees,
If we didn't have to celebrate
With all those ants and bees.
So once again we'll stay indoors
And have our Christmas here,
With our rellies and our neighbours
We'll share our Christmas cheer.
It doesn't matter where we are
At home or far away,
May the Grace of God be with you all
On an Aussie Christmas Day.
